I'm Audrey, founder of The Wrinkled Thistle. Knitting has been part of my story since childhood, my mum and gran showing me how stitches form, how tension changes, how fabric grows from patient repetition. Those lessons stayed with me through time away from the needles.

Life took me in other directions first: university, then medical research, and on to scholarly publishing. Each brought its own rewards, but they weren't what woke me up eager at dawn. Eventually, I returned to what had always called me back: knitting.

Ganseys occupy a special place in that love. They're more than garments; they're textile engineering. Born from necessity on the coasts around Britain, they were designed for fishermen working in brutal conditions — warm even when wet, durable enough to withstand salt spray and hard labour, fitted close enough not to catch on rigging. Every textured stitch, every yoke pattern, every seam placement served a function. There's no wasted motion in a well-made gansey. That's textile engineering at its finest, and it still speaks to me across the centuries.

But ganseys aren't museum pieces. They belong on modern shoulders, in contemporary wardrobes, worn and reworn for decades. While ganseys are my passion, I also explore broader knitting techniques and help makers understand construction rather than just follow instructions. Swatching until something clicks, exploring stitch libraries, watching a project grow row by row, that quiet joy applies across the craft.

I knit commissioned ganseys from my home in the North York Moors. The landscape here — moorland, coast, shifting light and weather — feeds my work. I'm developing online courses and workshops to teach knitters how to design and create their own knit-to-fit ganseys, without relying on rigid patterns. My goal isn't to produce followers of patterns, but independent makers who grasp construction well enough to design their own work. Alongside the courses, I'm creating mini-gansey patterns and a booklet about gansey history and construction, accessible entry points for those curious about the craft.

Teaching brings deep satisfaction: seeing someone's confidence build as they master a new technique, or make a design choice that's uniquely theirs. I send a weekly newsletter to my subscribers — progress notes, technique tips, and honest reflections on what I'm learning along the way.
